The oldest extant work of Tamil literature and grammar, traditionally credited to Tolkappiyar and associated with a Sangam (academy) of poets at Madurai, though its dating is among the most contested in Indian philology, with proposals for different layers ranging from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD. Organized into three books covering phonology and orthography, grammar and syntax, and poetics, including the classification of Sangam love poetry (akam) and heroic poetry (puram) that later Sangam anthologies build on.
