Patanjali's Mahabhashya works through Panini's grammar rule by rule, incorporating and debating Katyayana's intervening critical notes, becoming classical India's first great work of philosophical linguistics, asking what a word actually denotes and how meaning is constituted. Pataliputra is only a traditional association for Patanjali, not confirmed.
