Katyayana's varttikas, several thousand terse critical notes correcting and refining particular rules of Panini's grammar, survive nowhere as an independent text and are known only through their extensive citation inside Patanjali's later Mahabhashya. Katyayana's own location is unknown, claimed variously for Pataliputra and a southern Indian tradition.
