War Scroll

An extraordinarily detailed eschatological battle plan from the Dead Sea Scrolls, specifying troop formations, trumpet signals, banner inscriptions, and priestly liturgy for a climactic forty-year war between the "sons of light," led by the archangel Michael, and the "sons of darkness," including Israel's historical enemies and the Kittim, generally understood as Rome. Its schema of successive stages culminating in final victory draws directly on the apocalyptic four-empire vision of Daniel, adapted into an operational military document rather than a purely visionary one. Found among the Qumran scrolls, it shows a community that expected imminent cosmic war and prepared for it with the same procedural precision as its purity and admission rules.
