Small inscribed sheets of gold, folded and buried with the dead, giving the deceased's soul instructions for navigating the afterlife: avoid the spring beside the white cypress, find instead the cold water flowing from the Lake of Memory, and answer the guardians' challenge with a formula declaring divine origin. Found across a wide span of the Greek world, from Hipponion and Petelia in southern Italy to Thessaly, Crete, and Macedonia, and dated from around 400 BC into the Roman period, the tablets are Greek-language texts tied to Orphic and Bacchic mystery initiation rather than mainstream civic religion. This corpus files them separately from the general Greek literary and philosophical record as a distinct thread of mystery-cult material rather than treating them as part of the civic-literary tradition covered under Greece.
