The abduction of Persephone into the underworld and Demeter's grief-stricken search for her explain both the origin of the seasons and the founding of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the most important secret religious rite in the Greek world.

Composed in the same hexameter and formulaic style as the Homeric epics though not by Homer himself, this hymn narrates Hades's abduction of Persephone with Zeus's tacit consent, Demeter's furious grief and search across the earth, and the famine she inflicts on humanity until the gods negotiate Persephone's partial return, explaining thereafter why crops fail to grow for part of each year. The hymn closes by describing Demeter's institution, while disguised as a nurse at Eleusis, of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the secret initiation rites that promised participants a better fate after death and that remained central to Greek religious life for well over a thousand years.
