A concise series of imperial biographies from Augustus to Constantius II, written by a provincial-born historian who himself rose to become urban prefect of Rome, mixes moralizing character judgment with source material now largely lost elsewhere, material many scholars trace to a shared intermediate history (the hypothesized Enmann Kaisergeschichte) rather than to Victor's own independent research.
